What Does Sunscreen Actually Do?
Every other ingredient on this site works better with consistent use over weeks. Sunscreen is different.
Most of its value comes down to whether you’re using enough of it, in the right way, every single day.
That sounds simple. In practice, it’s the step people get wrong most often, usually without realizing it.
What sunscreen actually protects against
- Sunburn, the most immediate and visible sign of UV damage

Mineral versus chemical: two different mechanisms
Sunscreen filters fall into two categories, and they genuinely work differently, not just as a marketing distinction.
Mineral filters, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, sit on the skin’s surface and physically block or reflect UV rays before they penetrate.
They’re the only mineral filters currently approved as both safe and effective by the FDA.
Chemical filters, including avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, and homosalate, work by absorbing UV radiation and converting it into a small amount of heat, which then releases from the skin.
Neither category is universally better. Chemical formulas tend to feel lighter and blend more easily.
Mineral formulas tend to be better tolerated by sensitive or reactive skin, and are generally considered the more conservative choice during pregnancy.
The real reason most sunscreen underperforms
The SPF number on the label is measured using roughly a quarter teaspoon of product just for the face, applied in a lab setting.
Most people apply significantly less than that in real life.
Using less product than the label was tested with means you’re getting less protection than the number suggests, sometimes far less.
This gap, not the specific filter you choose, is the biggest reason real-world sunscreen performance often falls short of what people expect.
How to actually get the protection on the label
Apply a full quarter teaspoon for your face alone, more if you’re covering your neck and ears too. That’s more product than most people are used to using.
Reapply every two hours during real sun exposure, and immediately after swimming or heavy sweating, regardless of whether the product is labeled water-resistant.
Water resistance buys you some time, not a pass on reapplying.

Does sunscreen block vitamin D
This comes up often enough to address directly. Real-world sunscreen use, meaning realistic application amounts and frequency, appears to have a limited effect on vitamin D levels for most people.
So much UV still reaches skin through gaps in coverage, missed spots, and reapplication delays in practice.
If you have a specific medical reason to monitor vitamin D, that’s a conversation for your doctor, not a reason to skip sunscreen based on general reassurance.
What SPF numbers actually mean
SPF measures protection against UVB rays specifically, the type most responsible for sunburn.
It doesn’t directly measure UVA protection, the type more associated with photoaging and playing a role in skin cancer risk.
“Broad spectrum” on a label means the product has been tested and shown to protect against both UVA and UVB.
An SPF number alone, without “broad spectrum” on the label, tells you less than most people assume.
Beyond SPF 30, the jump in actual protection is smaller than the numbers suggest. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays; SPF 50 blocks about 98%.
The difference matters less than applying enough of either one, and reapplying it.
The systemic absorption question
A study published in JAMA Dermatology found that several common chemical sunscreen filters are absorbed into the bloodstream at levels above the FDA’s threshold for requiring additional safety testing.
That threshold exists to trigger more research, not to establish that the ingredients are unsafe.
It hasn’t changed mainstream dermatology guidance, which continues to recommend daily sunscreen use given the well-established, serious risks of unprotected sun exposure. If systemic absorption is something you’d rather avoid while more research develops, mineral sunscreen sidesteps the question entirely, since it isn’t designed to absorb.
How it fits with the rest of your routine
Sunscreen goes last in your morning routine, over moisturizer and any other actives.

Is sunscreen worth the daily habit

The evidence connecting cumulative UV exposure to visible aging and to skin cancer risk is about as well-established as skincare science gets.
The real barrier isn’t whether sunscreen works. It’s whether you’re applying enough of it, consistently, as the actual last step of your routine, every day regardless of weather or how sunny it looks outside.
