Dark Spots on the Nose

The nose sits at the center of the face and gets more direct, consistent sun exposure than almost any other area, which makes it a common site for dark spots. It’s also more prone to congestion and blackheads, which can leave their own type of mark behind.

Common causes specific to the nose

  • Sun exposure. The nose’s position and shape mean it rarely gets shaded, even when the rest of the face is partially covered by a hat brim.
  • Post-inflammatory marks from blackheads or clogged pores. The nose has a higher density of oil glands than most of the face, making it more prone to congestion that can leave a flat, discolored mark once it clears.
  • Friction and picking. The nose is touched, wiped, and picked at more than most areas, and repeated minor irritation can trigger pigment changes over time, especially in melanin-rich skin.

What tends to help

Consistent daily sunscreen on the nose specifically (a spot many people under-apply since it’s a small, curved area) is the single most protective habit. For existing spots, ingredients like niacinamide, vitamin C, and azelaic acid are commonly used to gradually even discoloration, though results generally take several weeks to become visible.

When it’s not just sun or acne marks

Spots that are asymmetric, growing, changing color, or accompanied by bleeding are outside the scope of routine skincare and should be evaluated by a dermatologist rather than treated at home.
